Signature Hole: General’s Ridge
Maybe it's the view of the North Carolina-style mountains. Or maybe it's the forest of oak, beech and poplar trees. It could be the wildlife that you're bound to see when playing a round of golf. It all speaks of the splendor you'll find at General's Ridge Golf Course in Manassas Park.
“It's an absolutely beautiful course. It really is a must-play,” said Buddy Behringer, who enjoys his job as general manager. “You can't play without seeing deer, hawks or foxes.”
Although this 18-hole championship golf course is close to big cities and suburbs in Northern Virginia, you'll feel miles away from the hustle and bustle. You'll commune with nature while enjoying the rolling hills and breath-taking scenery.
The course, which is 6,651 yards from the tips, is a Jerry Slack design that opened in the mid-1990s. Today, it is operated by the Prince William County Park Authority and has been made more playable for golfers of all levels.
Many golfers also enjoy the hospitality of the club's staff, said Behringer. Visitors can expect expertise from golf pro Todd Heilemann and Shawn Gill is considered one of the best superintendents around.
“The staff provides a service that people can expect at a private country club,” said Berhinger. “They assist you with your bags and open doors – they like to help.”
The general manager has been with General's Ridge for three years and also manages the Prince William golf course. Although the two courses keep him extremely busy, he loves his job.
“When I get up in the morning, it's hard to say I'm going to work. I really enjoy it,” he said. “It's interesting to meet different people and develop relationships. And you meet a lot of people from other countries.”
There are many regular golfers who come to enjoy the scenery as well as the golf and many services are available. The club is also very helpful for golfers who are looking for tips on playing the course. Every cart has a GPS system to help improve your game by providing photos and tips for each hole. Each golfer is also provided with a layout of the golf course.
The course itself is challenging but also considered one of the most inspiring and lively courses around. The club offers four sets of tees for different levels of play and the slope is also rated as the highest in Northern Virginia.
The club offers practice facilities, lessons and outings as well as facilities for parties and meetings. A quaint restaurant is also open for golfers who want to talk about the day over turkey sandwiches and chicken wings.
General's Ridge gets its name from the fact that it was once in the midst of Civil War history and the conflict at Bull Run. According to history accounts, troops camped near where the 4th hole is located.
Golfers of all talents are invited to enjoy the course and the surrounding nature. Make some history with your golf at General's Ridge.
