• Many insurance companies insist on Appraisals from a professional who has appraisal training and certification from an Appraisal Organization. Ask to see credentials and make sure the appraisal is signed.

• The accuracy of any appraisal will be directly proportionate to the time and attention invested. Be wary of the quick 2 line appraisal. Give the Appraiser the time they need.

• Usually items can be appraised for a set fee depending on the size and number of gemstones. The actual time spent on complex pieces will vary and may be charged at an hourly rate.

• The charge should never be based on a percent of the value as this will cost you more in fees, taxes or premiums.
