Media General’s Publishing Division has named Bruce Potter regional publisher for its community newspapers in Northern Virginia, effective August 1, 2007. In his new role, Mr. Potter will be publisher of the Potomac News and Manassas Journal Messenger. He will also be responsible for the Culpeper Star-Exponent and the Stafford County Sun.

Potter has been publisher of The (Waynesboro) News Virginian since 2004. Previously, he was director of news synergy for the Media General Publishing Division and has held a variety of other positions since beginning his career with Media General in 1985 as a reporter for The Richmond News Leader.

“Bruce is well qualified to head our operations in Northern Virginia. He brings proven leadership, strategic thinking and a strong journalism background to the position,” said Community Newspapers President Bob MacPherson. “Under Bruce’s direction, The News Virginian has grown and improved significantly, including circulation growth that landed them in the top 10 nationally during the most recent reporting period. I am confident he will bring the same successes to Northern Virginia.”

F. Gary Garczynski has been appointed to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta’s board of directors. Garczynski, a past Home Builders of Virginia and National Association of Home Builders president, is chairman of the National Housing Endowment and president of National Capital Land and Development Corporation, a construction and real estate development company in Woodbridge, Va.

Russell S. Rosenberger of Madison Homes, Inc., was named Builder of the Year by the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association. Peter J. Rigby, Jr. of Paciulli, Simmons & Associates Ltd., received the Associate of the Year honors.

Three Northern Virginia Building AIndustry members were recently recognized with awards in the Custom Home Design Awards. Congratulations to Potomac Valley Builders, Sugar Oak Corporation and Bowa Buidlers. From more than 500 entrants, only 23 awards were given.
